Everything you need to know about our woods

Only local wood species, but also…
Before discussing the specific characteristics of each type of wood, we wanted to talk to you about wood grading and classification. Each piece of wood has a grade, and it is important to understand certain principles. The more knots a piece of wood has, the more it loses quality points and the lower its grade. The principle is simple: the more defects a piece of wood has, the harder it is to work with and the greater the chance that certain defects will appear over time. Conversely, the more linear and flawless a piece of wood is, the better its grading and the higher the quality of the furniture in question.
Quality comes first.
At Brustique, all of our local suppliers are accredited by the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) and meticulously adhere to wood classification, grading, and drying standards. We source only Quebec wood classified as “Select or Prime,” which are the highest grades on the wood quality scale, in order to offer you furniture of the highest standard. It is also important to mention that all our wood is sourced locally.

Natural maple
Natural maple or sugar maple is known for both its beauty and its hardness. In addition to offering variations in color in the grain that give it undeniable beauty, maple is the second hardest wood in North America. As a very affordable wood, maple is greatly appreciated for its color, which makes it a versatile and easy-to-maintain wood for wooden tables. Its two shades of color, both light and dark, allow it to blend harmoniously into any room.

Ambrosia maple
Ambrosia maple is known for its impressive grain. This very special wood with multiple colors is actually red maple that has been attacked by an insect. The insect penetrates to the heart of the tree, and when sap flows through the wood, the tree reacts along the insect's path, leaving tiny holes. This phenomenon marks the wood with impressive colors. It is a highly prized wood with its own unique characteristics. Each ambrosia maple wood table is unique and remarkably beautiful.

White oak
White oak is a wood species that has excellent properties and adds warmth and softness to any room. This very hard and heavy wood is known for its durability and its light, golden, linear grain. White oak is also renowned for being a very stable wood, often used for outdoor furniture.

Black Walnut
With its dark wood grain and luxurious appearance, black walnut does not go unnoticed. Although it is less dense than our other wood species, black walnut is one of the best solid wood species. Its undeniable elegance and natural dark color give black walnut unique characteristics. It is impossible to mistake it for any other wood.
Although there is a difference in hardness between the different woods, it is important to understand that they are all solid wood species. None of these woods fall into the category of softwoods. They are therefore ideal for making solid wood furniture.
